I am an illustrator.
Curiosity can be piqued through creating historical illustrations, editorial images
and any range of fictional impressions, the only limit is the imagination. My personal
work focuses on the fantasy genre as that is where I can create with the greatest
freedom and indulge my love of crafting stories and also as a form of escapism. I feel
that society definitely still has a need for stories to be told, despite most media that is
consumed being marketed to shorter and shorter attention spans. Long running series
of programs, films and books attest to this desire to be engaged at a deeper, more
meaningful level. As the author Ursula K. Le Guin quotes, “The direction of escape is
towards freedom. What then is ‘escapism’ an accusation of?”
What I endeavor to do with my art is to show . When I begin to live in another’s
image and create my own stories from what’s shown is when I would consider their
piece to be successful. Being able to elicit the same feeling is what I’m attempting to
recreate with my own work. To facilitate this I rely on historically proven methods used
by illustrators before such as Norman Rockwell, Dean Cornwell and Sargent. The use
of photographic reference and maquettes as well as compiling life drawings and
paintings as a sort of visual library to create from is still a common practice for many
illustrators currently working.
